Michael Brice Oberhelman, age 47 of Kansas City, Missouri, died Sunday, September 1, 2013, at the St. Luke’s North Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on April 1, 1966, in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Bobby Brice and Mary Jane (Sailors) Oberhelman. Michael was a computer administrator at Fort Leavenworth with the United States Department of Defense. He received his BA from Park University and his MBA from Webster University, both in Computer Science and Information Systems. He served 11 years in the U.S. Army with combat service in Desert Storm. He also received a Distinguished Service Award for 20 years of government service. He was honorably discharged and received numerous medals for commendation and achievement. He was a member of the Kansas Iota Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity at Kansas State University where he received the Father Weisenberg award for outstanding brother in 1986. He was also a member of the American Legion and enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson. He is survived by his son, Mitchell Oberhelman of Kansas City, Missouri; his mother, Mary Jane Oberhelman of Riley; his brother, Mark Oberhelman and wife Leslie of Manhattan; seven nieces and nephews and four great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Oberhelman. A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley with Rev. Bill Eisele and Rev. D. Erich Schwartz officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Riley Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Mitchell Oberhelman Education Fund and the American Heart Association. Memorial contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley.
