Mary Jo Hampl
June 21, 1946 - April 30, 2026
Mary “Mary Jo” Jolene (Hedke) Hampl, 79, was peacefully called home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 30, 2026, in Andover, KS at the home of her son, Dr. Jason Hampl, M.D. Mary Jo was a Registered Nurse at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville for 35 years.
Mary Jo was born on June 21, 1946, in Clay Center, Kansas to Charles and Wilma (Richter) Hedke. She grew up on the family farm near Otter Creek north of Randolph in Riley County. She graduated from Blue Valley High School in Randolph in 1964.
On July 15, 1967, she married her classmate Dennis Hampl on the Hedke farm. Mary Jo completed the nursing program through Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in Topeka in 1967.
Mary Jo and Dennis would move to Emporia, Larned, Loveland (Colorado), Marysville, Beloit, and then return to Marysville to be near family. She helped deliver many of Marshall County’s babies, and on three occasions delivered babies before a doctor could be present.
Mary Jo was a devoted follower of Christ, and her faith was central to how she lived. She was baptized at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Winkler. She was a long time member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Marysville. She was active in Evening Circle, Circle of Faith, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School groups. She also served in the Winkler Willing Workers club.
Mary Jo cherished time with family. She had an infectious laugh and used humor for many of life’s moments. She and Dennis excitedly hosted a community potluck titled “Otter Creek Picnic” on the Hedke Farmyard.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis, in 2025. Her father, Charles Hedke, in 1986. Her mother, Wilma, in 2002. Sisters Charlene Ryan in 2016 and Marcelyn Rolfs in 2017.
