Jerry Lynn Rood, age 61 of Leonardville, Kansas, died Sunday, October 6, 2013, at his residence. He was born on October 17, 1951, in Lincoln, Kansas, the son of Frank Nelson and Edna Marie (Meier) Rood. He graduated from Riley County High School in 1969. After high school he worked in construction and then managed COOP’s in Leonardville, Solomon, Greensburg and Haviland. In 1992 he went to work for Kansas State University and then Sears. He drove a truck for the past 10 years until his health failed. He enjoyed woodworking and in his younger years, working on race cars. He was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church. In 1971 he married Carol Smith. This marriage was blessed with a daughter, Jamie. They later divorced. He married Shirley Strauser on August 28, 2002. She survives of the home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Jamie Rood and fiance Levi Bailey of Riley; his mother, Edna Rood of Leonardville; three brothers, Robert Rood of Topeka, Ronald Rood and wife Mary of Raymore, Missouri and Norman Rood and wife Cathy of Oakridge, Missouri; his granddaughter, Jaycee Bailey of Riley; one step daughter, Rebecca Long and husband Dwight of Junction City; two step sons, David Dudley of Eudora and James Cassatt and wife Laura of Oakridge, Missouri and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Rood and two brothers, Vernon Rood and Dale Rood A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, Kansas with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. A private family burial will be at a later date in the Walsburg Cemetery near Leonardville, Kansas. A memorial has been established for the Jerry Rood Memorial Fund. Memorial contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, Kansas.
