Eugenia Louise Fittell

Eugenia “Gene” Louise Fittell, age 99 of Shawnee, Kansas, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Care Haven Home in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born on September 4, 1914 at Randolph, Kansas, the daughter of John and Amelia (Kunze) Grob. She attended Monterey Country School and graduated from Randolph Rural High School in 1931. She was secretary to the Dept. of Civil Engineering and attended Kansas State University from 1934-1941, graduating with a degree in Home Economics. She taught Vocational Home Ec. at Belleville, Kansas. On February 6, 1942 she married George H. Fittell from Beloit, Ks. During his military service career they were stationed in Alaska and Japan where she organized the Sunday School for over 200 children who lived on the base and taught typing and English to military and civilian students. The family continued to move with Gene doing most of the sorting, packing and generally keeping things organized while George was busy with his military career. She also worked for the Dept. of Hearing and Speech at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Gene and George attended almost every K-State basketball and football game after moving to Topeka where they were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka. In 2000 George and Gene moved to Shawnee to be close to family. Gene gardened, even when she needed the “handicapped railing” her grand-daughters installed in the garden plot. After George died in 2007, Gene began living with Carol and Bill. In June 2012 Gene moved to Heartland Assisted living, in Nov. 2013 she moved to Care Haven Home where she continued to receive wonderful, caring, assistance from an incredible staff. Gene is survived by one daughter, Carol Mundy and husband, Bill of Shawnee; one son, John Fittell and wife Valerie of Lawrence; three grandchildren, Carol K., Camille, and Carly and two great grandchildren, Tallulah and Penelope.
