Dorthy Rundquist

Dorthy Fay Rundquist, age 90 of Clay Center, passed to her eternal heavenly rest on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Medicalodge in Clay Center. She was born at home on March 28, 1925, the daughter of Homer and Hazel (Lawson) Lindstrom. Dorthy grew up in the Alert Community, attending the one-room school. Her home was the site of the Alert Post Office. She graduated from Leonardville High School. Having received her “Normal” Training, she taught in two one-room schools: the first at Laurel Hill on the Lasita Road and then at the Alert School where she had received her early education. While attending church camp at Camp Wood, she became interested in a young man who also attended the Alert Covenant Church. Dorthy married that man, Veryl Rundquist, on June 26, 1944 at her family’s home. They were the parents of Mary Kathryn, David Alan, Donald Roger, Steven Dale and Dorrene Annette. Dorthy was a homemaker who devoted herself to raising her family. She was active in the Pleasant Hill Embroidery Club, Green EHU, Green PTA and the Covenant Women’s group. As a life long member of the Alert Covenant Church, she was active in many areas of the church, including children’s ministries. Up until retirement, Veryl and Dorthy farmed north of Green. At that time they moved to a home in Clay Center. She loved music, especially old hymns, and sang with the Silvertones in Clay Center. She also loved to read and embroidery. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Dorthy was very hospitable and enjoyed entertaining friends, family and hunters who came home with her family. She spent her final time being lovingly cared for by the staff at Medicalodge in Clay Center, with her husband, Veryl, often by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, David Rundquist and Donald Rundquist; a sister, Twila Hendrickson and a step-father, Martin Klocke. She is survived by her husband, Veryl of Clay Center; two daughters, Mary Bell and Greg of Riley and Dorrene Peterson and Bernie of Leonardville; one son, Steve Rundquist and Karen of Leonardville; two daughter-in-laws, Donna Rundquist of Green and Debbie Rundquist of Topeka; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 17, 2015 at the Alert Covenant Church with Pastor Dwight Diller officiating. Respect calls may be made anytime Wednesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, west of the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alert Covenant Church in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley.
