Carol Shorman

Carol Mavine (Leidig) Shorman, surrounded by her family, left this earthly life on April 16, 2026, and was greeted by her Savior, who carried her to her heavenly home. She was 86.

Carol was born January 19, 1940, in Washington, County, Kansas. She was the third daughter of nine children born to Cecil and Dorothy (Finch) Leidig.

She grew up around horses. With a can-do-it attitude, she learned to Roman ride - standing with one foot each on two horses - but kept her skill a secret from her parents until her dad found out. Carol would Roman ride at local rodeos and other events with her family.

After graduating high school, she found a job in Manhattan, Kansas, where she met Robert (Bill) William Shorman. They were married on February 8, 1959. They made their home on the family farm near Green, Kansas. To this union, three children were born: Gene, Rex and Ruth.

After her children started school, and with the support of her husband, Carol went back to school. She earned a bachelor's degree and later a master's teaching degree from Kansas State University. In the fall of 1974, she began a 29-year teaching career with the Riley County School District. She retired from teaching in 2003.

After retirement, Carol kept active with church, homemaker groups, and after school activities for the kids.

Carol and Bill had many adventures, joys, and tragedies during their marriage. Joys included seeing their four grandchildren and watching them grow up. They had adventures on the short and long trips they took with their fifth-wheel trailer after she retired. Tragedy came in the total loss of their house to a fire in 1983, but together they rebuilt.

Carol lost Bill to cancer in 2015, after 56 years of marriage.

She continued living on the farm until an accident in 2023. She spent her final years at The Cedars Retirement Community in McPherson, Kansas.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert "Bill" William Shorman; five sisters, Joyal Crain, Marvel Boston, Wilma Leidig-Leatherwood, Celia Schmidt and Linda Leidig, and two brother-in-laws, Robert Boston and Ernie Scheetz.

She is survived by her three children, Gene Shorman and wife Debra of McPherson, Kansas, Rex W. Shorman of Pearland, Texas, and Ruth Sanders and husband Daren of Wells, Kansas; one sister, Zetta Scheetz of Fairbury, Nebraska; one brother, Jerry Leidig of Salina, Kansas; as well as four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
