Barbara Brownlee

Barbara Jeanne Brownlee, born April 1, 1929, passed away on March 10, 2026, surrounded by family who loved her deeply and cared for her faithfully throughout her later years. Barbara lived nearly 97 remarkable years marked by independence, generosity, curiosity, and an enduring connection to the people and places she cherished.

Barbara was the daughter of Maynard and Marvel (Lee) Zeller. She embraced her early rural roots in the Sedalia, Keats, and Manhattan, Kansas communities and later built a full life in Kansas City, Johnson County, and Prairie Village, where she found community, beauty, and purpose.

In her early years Barbara was married to Leo Riniker, with whom she had her son, Michael Riniker. Though that marriage later ended, Barb's greatest joy from that time was becoming a mother. Barb also endured the heartbreaking loss of her son, Mike, far too early in life - a sorrow she carried with grace and quiet strength. She later married the love of her life, William (Bill) Brownlee, and together they shared many happy years building a life and home in Kansas City.

Barbara had a remarkable range of passions that she enjoyed with friends and family. She was a devoted Kansas State University, Royals, and Chiefs fan. She and Bill held season tickets for the Chiefs for twenty years and when not able to attend the games always held a Chiefs watch party with Kansas City barbeque and pizza. Many of these celebrations were attended by Barb's neighbors, Larry and Robin White, who were an important part of her life and whose companionship brought her great comfort and joy.

Barb loved gardening and took great pride in her yard, creating spaces that were beautiful, welcoming, and distinctly hers. Barb and Bill traveled the country with the top down in her Ruby Red Mustang, collecting bricks from towns and landmarks all over America. Barb worked for twenty-five years at Johnson County Bank. Bill and Barb later sold real estate and enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the Kansas City area with their clients.

Barb was a classic in every sense. She kept her nails done, her hair styled, her earrings on, and her Chiefs necklace proudly in place. Barb thrived as a hostess to both friends and family and provided a welcoming space to many nieces, nephews, and extended family over the years. She was an expert conversationalist, avid listener, and wise advisor. Many of these gatherings were centered around making pizza and enjoying a glass of wine. Barb and Bill filled their home with laughter, jazz, and stories that are certain to live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew them. Barb's grounded rural common sense was perfectly balanced by her modern, forward-thinking independence, making her a treasure to all that knew her, young and old.

Barbara Brownlee was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard and Marvel (Lee) Zeller; her beloved husband, William (Bill) Brownlee; her son, Michael Riniker; sisters, Lulu Mae (Lu) Hollowell (Zeller), Corine Snow (Zeller), and Virginia Zeller (who died as a young child); brother, Vernon Zeller; and brothers-in-law George Snow and Wayne Hollowell. Left to treasure her memory are brothers John Zeller, Jack Zeller (and wife Nancy), sister-in-law Romona Zeller, as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A memorial service to celebrate Barb will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Sedalia Community Church. A lunch in the church annex will follow. All who knew and loved Barb are welcome to attend. Memorials may be made to Sedalia Community Church and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
