Gerry A. Mather

Gerry Allen Mather, age 76, of Toledo, went home to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

He was born in Waterville, Kansas on March 5, 1944 to Cassie Belle and Everett Mather.

Gerry married his high school sweetheart, Jan Brooks on December 27, 1964 and they adopted two sons, Kenneth Scott Mather and John Timothy Mather.

He was saved on November 8, 1971 in Sacramento, CA when the couple lived there. Gerry served his country in the U.S. Air Force and after being discharged he entered college and was eventually employed by Owens Corning Fiberglas. The company moved Gerry and his family to Toledo in 1982. 

He was active in sports as long as his health allowed him to be and enjoyed many hobbies. Gerry enjoyed talking with classmates, friends and relatives although his health prevented him from leaving his home for visits or to attend and serve the Lord at Lewis Avenue Baptist Church where he has been a member since 1982. While he was able, Gerry enjoyed getting to know students and helping Jan with many activities and projects related to her position as director of bands and strings at State Line Christian School. He loved tracing the ancestry of family and has collected obituaries and past history of approximately 35,000 family members. Gerry’s smile, spirit and caring nature will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Mather.

Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jan Mather; son, Kenn (Jackie) Mather, of Columbus, OH; brothers, Roderick (Teri) Mather, of Newton, KS and Greg (Zona) Mather, of Odessa, MO; many other relatives, friends, long time relations along with a number of doctors and staff who served him with expert care.

The family will receive guests on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). 

Funeral Services will begin Friday, January 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Lewis Avenue Baptist Church, 6320 Lewis Ave., Temperance, MI 48182 with visitation from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in church prior to the service.Funeral services will also be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville. Visitation will proceed the funeral from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Blue Rapids, Kansas following the service.
