Richard H. Hawley

Richard H. “Harv” Hawley, age 84, of Waterville, passed away at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

Richard was born April 25, 1936, at Waterville, the son of Thomas H. and Mary A. (Tommer) Hawley.

He attended Lone Tree and Joint Consolidated Number One Grade School and in 1954 he graduated from Waterville High School. He was active in FFA. During high school and for a while afterward he worked at Elliot Market, then for John Tommer General Carpentry. Drafted into the US Army he served from 1959 to 1961. Later Richard worked with Raymond Roepke Builder, Rockwell International in Atchison and later with Nelson Construction. He retired from Nelson Construction just a few years ago in 2017. Even in retirement he continued to do carpentry and it seemed there was always another job waiting when he was finished.

He enjoyed hunting, especially hunting coons with his dog Hammer. He subscribed to all the hunting magazines. His answering machine’s message says “Hammer and I are probably coon hunting or something - will get back to you in a day or two.”He also enjoyed helping his friend Jean Roepke with her cooking, he would subscribe to cooking magazines just so he could help her with new recipes and techniques. They had a system, she would cook and he would do the dishes. How lucky could a girl get.

Richard was a member of St. Monica, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Blue Rapids.

He is survived by his sister Joan Sharpe of Boulder City, Nevada and his companion of more than twenty years, Jean Roepke.

Viewing is from noon to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, with visitation between 6:30 and 8:00 pm, at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, October 8, 2020, at St. Monica, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Blue Rapids, with Father Jim Shaughnessy and Father Anthony Chendumalli as the Celebrants. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.

Wearing a mask will be required.
