Melvin Nemechek

William M. “Melvin” Nemechek, age 89, of Blue Rapids, passed away on March 17, 2020, at Blue Valley Senior Living in Blue Rapids.

Melvin was born May 6, 1930, at the family home north of Blue Rapids, to Roy and Lucile L. (Lillibridge) Nemechek. 

He attended Starr School north of Waterville. 

On October 31, 1954 he married Nancy E. Yungeberg, they later divorced. 

In 1951 he joined the US Army. After the war he went to work at Georgia Pacific north of Blue Rapids. When he retired, he had been there thirty-five years.  

On June 28, 1986, he marred Deborah “Debbie” A. Harder.

Melvin was a stubborn fella with a good sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing cards, especially poker. Every Sunday was reserved for family gatherings around good food and fun. His New Year’s Eve parties were always enjoyed.

Survivors include his wife Debbie of Blue Rapids, his children: Bryon (Linda) Nemechek of Blue Rapids, Kevin (Joanne) Nemechek of Inverness, Florida, Diann Elliott of Washington, Joleen (Roger Miller) Musil of Marysville, Jay Harder of Pickerel, Nebraska, Janet (Dave) Newmyer of Wilber, Nebraska and Jeff Harder of Gretna, Nebraska, by twenty three grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, three step children: David (Janet) Newmeyer of Wilbur, Nebraska, Jay Harder of Pickerel, Nebraska and Jeff Harder of Gretna, Nebraska, two brothers: Lyle (Ladonna) Nemechek, George (Sonya) Nemechek, and three sisters: Donna Whitesell, Vera Walsh and Verna (Melvin) Williams.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters: Mabel Brewer and Wilma Hogan, two brothers: Bob Nemechek and Donald Nemechek and a son-in-law, Dale Musil.

A private family viewing and graveside service are planned. A memorial service with military honors is to be held at a later date. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery. Pastor Troy Bowers will officiate. Casket Bearers are Tom Elliott, Justin Musil, Nathan Musil, Matt Musil, Darren Nemechek, Bill Wanamaker and Roger Miller.

Memorials are suggested to either the Valley Heights Food Pantry or the Good Samaritan Fund and may be sent in care of Terry-Christie Funeral Home at PO Box 61, Waterville, Kansas 66548.
