Donald N. Hirt, age 89, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019, at Community Memorial Health Care in Marysville. Don was born November 16, 1929 in Waterville, to Charles E. and Helga (Lindquist) Hirt, Sr. He graduated from Waterville, High School in 1947. Don married Norma Lee Hawkins on November 18, 1951, at Axtell, she passed away on July 2, 2004. After high school Don tried his hand at farming for several years. He then joined the US Army, serving during the Korean War. A few years after the war, he began working for Georgia Pacific at Blue Rapids, as a miner. He retired 29 years later in 1993. He married Norma J. Roepke on August 17, 2007 at Blue Rapids. He was a member of the Waterville United Methodist Church, Springer Post 332 of the American Legion in Waterville, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Marysville Moose Lodge and the Waterville Lions Club. Survivors include his wife Norma, two daughters; Jacine (Stan) Alderson of Chapman, Linda (John) Meyers of Clifton, five grandchildren; Sarah (Shannon), Josh, Racheal, Cora and Monica, 12 great grandchildren, two step-daughters; Shari (Mike) Poole of Knoxville, Tennessee and Ann (Jess) Gehin of Idaho Falls, Idaho, two step grandsons; Spencer and Devin. Preceding him in death are his parents, his first wife Norma Lee and two brothers; Gail Hirt and Charles “Jiggs” Hirt. Viewing is from noon to 8:00 pm, Monday, with visitation between 6:30 and 8:00 pm, at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville. Funeral services are at 10:00 am, Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at the Waterville United Methodist Church with Pastor Debby Dick officiating. Music is to include “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace” as congregational hymns with Beverly Hedke as the organist. Casket Bearers are; Shannon Cummins, Josh Alderson, Bryon Nemechek, Larry Nolte, Larry Taylor, Ben Hawkins, Mark Hawkins and Kevin Hawkins. Honorary Bearers are; John Meyers, Stan Alderson, Dennis Hawkins, Raymond Lindquist, Lyle Walter, Doug Pishny, Dennis Osborne and Bob Roepke. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville. Military Honors will be provided by the Fort Leavenworth Honors Detail.
